Average net worth by age in the UK

Median household net worth rises steeply with age. It starts at just £15,200 for households headed by someone aged 16 to 24, who have had little time to build up property or pensions, and climbs to a peak of £502,500 in the 65 to 74 band, some 33 times higher. It then falls back to £373,100 for households headed by someone aged 75 and over, as pensions and savings are drawn down in retirement. The overall median across all ages is £293,700.

One coverage note worth stating plainly: the Wealth and Assets Survey covers Great Britain, so these figures exclude Northern Ireland. They are household figures, not individual ones, and are grouped by the age of the household head.

Why the median, not the average

Wealth is far more unequal than income, so the mean is a poor guide to a typical household. A small number of very wealthy households pull the average up well above what most people hold. The median, the middle household, is the honest benchmark. If your net worth is near the median for your age, you are squarely in the middle of the pack.

What makes up household wealth

The ONS splits total wealth into four parts. Property and pensions dominate, which is why net worth builds slowly through your working life and peaks around retirement.

Wealth also varies sharply by region: median household wealth ranges from £489,800 in the South East down to £179,900 in the North East. To place yourself precisely, add up your own assets and debts in the calculator below.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average net worth in the UK?
The median household net worth in Great Britain is £293,700, on the ONS Wealth and Assets Survey for April 2020 to March 2022. This is total wealth: property, private pensions, savings and investments, and physical possessions, minus debts. Median means the middle household, which is a fairer guide than the average because a small number of very wealthy households pull the mean far higher.
What is the average net worth by age in the UK?
Median household net worth rises steeply with age, from £15,200 for households headed by someone aged 16 to 24, to £209,600 at 35 to 44, £301,900 at 45 to 54, and a peak of £502,500 at 65 to 74. It then falls back to £373,100 for households headed by someone aged 75 and over, as savings and pensions are drawn down. These are Great Britain figures; the survey does not cover Northern Ireland.
Why does net worth peak around retirement?
Wealth builds over a working life: mortgages are paid down so property wealth grows, and pension pots build with decades of contributions. By the 65 to 74 band both are at their largest, which is why median wealth peaks there at roughly £502,500, about 33 times the level of the youngest households.
What counts towards net worth?
The ONS measures four parts: net property wealth (40%), private pension wealth (35%), net financial wealth such as savings and investments (14%), and physical wealth like vehicles and contents (10%). Net worth is the total of these minus what you owe.
