What subscriptions can you pause?

This tool works best for subscriptions that allow temporary holds via email:

  • Gym memberships, especially for medical reasons or travel
  • Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
  • Box subscriptions (meal kits, beauty boxes)
  • Professional memberships
  • Personal training or coaching packages

What a subscription pause letter should contain

A pause request fails for one of two reasons: it does not identify the account, or it is vague enough to be processed as a cancellation. Include your name as it appears on the membership, the account or membership number, an explicit line saying this is a temporary hold and not a cancellation, the pause start date, the restart date, and a request for written confirmation of both. Add the reason if your contract requires one. The generator above prompts for each field so the request arrives complete.

Pause or cancel?

Pause when you intend to return and the current rate is worth protecting. Gyms commonly charge a fresh joining fee on rejoining, and a freeze usually preserves your original price, so a three-month hold can be cheaper than cancelling and coming back. Cancel when you are not sure. Pause windows are capped, often at three to six months, and billing restarts automatically at the end without a reminder. If you would not sign up again at today's price, use the cancellation letter generator instead.

Freeze fees and restart dates

A freeze is not always free. Many gyms and clubs keep a small holding fee running through the pause to preserve the membership, so ask which applies and get it confirmed in writing before the next billing date. Pin the restart date down as well. Memberships resume at full price on that date with no further notice, and a paused subscription you forget about is the most expensive kind. Put the restart date in your calendar the day the confirmation arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pause a subscription?
Check whether the company offers a freeze or hold, which is usually in the account settings or the membership terms. Streaming services and app-store subscriptions often have a pause button built in. Gyms, magazines and box subscriptions almost always require a written request instead, sometimes with a form or a fee. Send the request in writing with the pause start date, the restart date and your membership number, and ask for written confirmation of both dates before your next billing date.
What should a subscription pause letter say?
Five things: your name and account or membership number, that you are requesting a temporary hold rather than a cancellation, the date the pause should start, the date it should end, and a request for written confirmation. Add the reason if the contract requires one, because medical and travel grounds are the two most contracts explicitly allow. Being explicit that this is not a cancellation matters, since a vague request is sometimes processed as one.
Is it better to pause or cancel a subscription?
Pause if you are coming back and the joining fee or the current price is worth keeping. Gyms in particular charge a new joining fee on rejoining, and a paused membership usually holds your original rate. Cancel if you are unsure, because pause periods are capped, often at three to six months, and a lapsed hold reverts to full billing. If you would not resubscribe at today's price, that is your answer.
Can I pause a gym membership?
Most gym contracts allow a freeze, typically one to six months per year, and many charge a reduced holding fee of a few pounds or dollars a month rather than nothing at all. Medical grounds and extended travel are the two reasons most commonly accepted, and a doctor's note usually secures a longer freeze. Notice periods still apply, so send the request before the next billing date rather than after it.
Do I still get charged while my subscription is paused?
Sometimes. A full freeze stops billing, but many gyms and clubs keep a small holding fee running to preserve your membership and your rate. Ask which applies in your request and get the answer in writing, because a holding fee you did not expect on a six-month freeze adds up. Also confirm what happens on the restart date, since most memberships resume at full price automatically without further notice.
How do I write a letter to cancel a subscription instead?
If a pause is not what you need, the wording changes: a cancellation letter has to state that you are cancelling, give the effective date, and withdraw authority for further payments. Our subscription cancellation letter generator produces that version, including the notice-period wording that gym and club contracts require.

A paused subscription still has a restart date.
