How much is council tax band H?
The highest and most expensive band in England. A Band H home pays double the Band D charge. On the England average Band D charge of £2,392 for 2026/27, that works out at about £4,784 a year, or roughly £398.67 a month over 12 instalments. Your local council sets its own Band D figure, so the real bill can be higher or lower. Enter your council's Band D amount in the calculator above for a number that matches your area.
How council tax band H is worked out
Every band is a fixed share of the Band D charge, set in law and the same across every council. Band H is 18/9 of Band D, so once you know your council's Band D figure you multiply it by 18/9 to get the Band H charge. The band itself comes from your home's estimated open-market value on 1 April 1991, not today's price. In England, Band H covers homes valued at more than £320,000 on that date.
