Microsoft 365-specific things to know

Microsoft 365 subscriptions can work differently depending on your plan or how you signed up. These tips cover common edge cases.

Business plans need admin approval
If you have Microsoft 365 through work, only your IT administrator can cancel the subscription. Contact your IT department instead.
Files stay in OneDrive for 30 days
After cancellation, your OneDrive files remain accessible for 30 days before being deleted. Download important files before this period ends.
Annual plans may have cancellation fees
Monthly Microsoft 365 plans cancel immediately, but annual commitments may charge an early termination fee if cancelled before the year ends.

Before you cancel, keep this in mind

These details can affect your cancellation timing or whether it goes through properly.

1. Check who's actually billing you

Make sure Microsoft is charging you directly. If you signed up through your employer, school, or a reseller, you'll need to cancel through them instead.

2. Access continues until period ends

You'll keep full Microsoft 365 access until your current billing period expires, whether you cancel on day 1 or day 29 of your cycle.

3. Download files from OneDrive

Your OneDrive storage will be reduced to 5GB after cancellation. Make sure to download or move important files that exceed this limit.

Other options to consider

If cost is the issue, you might be able to downgrade or switch billing cycles instead of cancelling completely.

Downgrade your Microsoft 365 plan

Microsoft offers several pricing tiers. You can switch to a cheaper plan like Microsoft 365 Basic or Personal instead of cancelling entirely.

  • Microsoft 365 Basic - $1.99/month for web apps and 100GB OneDrive

  • Microsoft 365 Personal - $6.99/month for one person

  • Microsoft 365 Family - $9.99/month for up to 6 people
