Crypto Visa Cards: How They Work (and How to Get the Best Perks)

Get better perks while managing your money and paying for everyday life, travel, bills, and subscriptions.
You’ve probably noticed the rise of crypto payment cards over the last year.
They’re popping up everywhere, inside crypto wallets, apps, neobanks, usually with cashback, points, or some kind of flashy perk attached.
Some platforms hype their rewards heavily.
Others are more low-key.
Either way, these cards are becoming a legit way to spend stablecoins or crypto balances on real-life bills, subscriptions, and everyday purchases.
But what are these cards actually?
How do you know what benefits you’re really getting?
And which ones are actually worth using?
Let’s break it down.
Most Crypto Apps Aren’t Issuing Cards Themselves

Here’s the part most people don’t realise:
Almost none of these crypto apps actually issue their own Visa or Mastercard. Instead, they use an infrastructure provider like:
These companies give crypto neobanks “card issuing as a service.”
The crypto app:
Designs the UI
Manages the card settings
Shows the balance
Builds spend controls
Markets the product
But the issuer platform does all the behind the scenes heavy lifting:
Compliance
Fraud checks
Reporting
And importantly:
The issuer + Visa determine what base perks the card actually has.
Not the crypto app.
For this article, we’ll focus mainly on Visa cards issued through Rain, since they’re currently the most common in crypto (MetaMask, EtherFi, and many others use them).
So What Benefits Do These Cards Actually Have?
When you look at one of these cards, think in two layers:
1. Platform-added rewards
These are the flashy, temporary, or app-specific perks:
Points or token rewards
Referral bonuses
“Spend x, earn y” promos
Travel or special events partnerships
Some of these such as the high cashbacks usually aren’t sustainable long-term.
They’re great to farm, but not great for setting up long-term bills or subscriptions and it's better to look at fees and more long-term perks.
2. Visa tier benefits (hidden perks most people miss)
This is where people get confused.
Every Visa card has a tier, and each tier has built-in perks:
Airport lounge access
Hotel discounts
Concierge
Extended warranties
Travel insurance
Purchase protection
Emergency assistance
Most users never know these exist because:
Crypto apps rarely explain them
Issuer platforms (like Rain) don’t publish their benefit sheets publicly
But the perks are there because they come from Visa, not from the crypto company.
You may see MetaMask or EtherFi promoting things like:
“concierge service”
“hotel discounts”
“airport lounges”
Most of these aren’t custom deals.
They’re Visa tier perks that come included depending on whether the issuer cards are Platinum, Signature or Infinite
So choosing a card for it's tier can often come with extra built in benefits.
Visa Card Tiers (and what they actually mean)

Note: actual perks vary by region + issuing bank + Visa’s local agreements.
Most crypto cards issued through Rain tend to be Platinum or Signature, but some platforms and regions support Infinite too.
Visa Platinum
This is the “base” premium card. Common perks include:
Basic purchase protection
Extended warranty on some purchases
Travel assistance hotline
Limited travel insurance (sometimes
Occasional hotel or rental car discounts
It doesn’t always include lounge access.
Best for:
People who just want a reliable spending card with some basic protections.
Visa Signature
This is the tier where perks start getting more meaningful.
Typical Signature benefits include:
Airport lounge access (usually via LoungeKey or Priority Pass variants) Some of the crypto versions don't include airport lounge or it's not unlimited.
Hotel discounts + upgrades (Visa Luxury Hotel Collection)
Concierge services
Better purchase protection
Stronger travel insurance
Extended warranties
Premium rental car coverage
This is the most common tier used by crypto cards wanting to offer “premium” perks without going overboard.
Best for:
Users who travel occasionally, want lounge access, and want more protection for purchases.
Visa Infinite
This is the highest tier and comes with the strongest perks. Have only seen this card rarely offered, such as the Crypto.com Obsidian card:
Higher-tier or unlimited airport lounges + Guest passes
Luxury hotel program benefits (late checkout, upgrades, deals)
Comprehensive travel insurance
High-value purchase protection
Concierge
Emergency assistance
Premium rental insurance
Infinite cards are less common in crypto, but not impossible depending on the region and issuing bank.
Best for:
Frequent travelers or users who want maximum insurance and lifestyle perks.
Choosing the Right Crypto Card
If you’re planning to use your crypto card for:
Subscriptions + recurring payments
Look for:
Reliable issuer (Rain, MoonPay)
Good UX in the app
Low or no top-up fees
Easy virtual card management
Merchant blocking or freeze options
Low and Transparent exchange rates (No FX markups, Avici is good for this)
Farm temporary rewards.
But for long-term.
You want something stable that you will use regularly.
Farming cashback or points
Pick platforms offering:
High cashback rewards (Avoid getting locked into staking tier if possible, i did this with the initial CRO crypto.com and learnt my lesson)
Token incentives or points
Multipliers for spending
Just know these often drop off after a few months.
Travel + lifestyle perks
You should check:
Which Visa tier the card actually is
What benefits your region supports
Does the Neobank have extra addons or partnerships to the cards that you would use.
Whether the app mentions lounges, concierge, or luxury hotel perks
Signature and Infinite cards are where the real perks are.
Why This Matters
There’s a lot of noise in this space, cashbacks, tokens, temporary perks, so it’s hard to understand what you’re actually getting long-term.
Once you understand how these cards are structured: crypto app → issuer (Rain) → Visa → perks, the benefits make more sense.
Most people never realise they already have lounge access, hotel perks, or concierge through a crypto card because nobody explains it clearly.
Now you know exactly what to look for.
